It was impossible for Id Software to create a game honoring the series' traditions while keeping up with the changing landscape of first person shooter games. The quality of the game itself shines through in a way that it couldn't have for players with a bigger chip on their shoulder. It's applied nicely, even though it isn't technically impressive.
